JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – BHP Billiton donated $500 000 to the Mozambique Red Cross to assist with humanitarian disaster relief following the recent floods in Mozambique.
The donation would be made by BHP Billiton Sustainable Communities – a charity established by the company as part of its community investment programme – with the company matching any additional contributions made by employees.
“BHP Billiton is committed to supporting the communities in which it operates and we hope these funds can make a difference to Mozambique’s recovery,” said BHP Billiton CEO Marius Kloppers in a statement.
The company employs around 2 200 staff and contractors at its Mozal aluminium smelter in southern Mozambique.
“Our thoughts go out to all those affected by these floods. We hope this donation will help communities in Maputo and beyond,” added Mozal asset president Danie Murray.
