PERTH (miningweekly.com) – ASX-listed Base Resources has achieved another milestone in the development of its Kwale mineral sands project, in Kenya, after closing the Mukurumudzi dam.
The Mukurumudzi dam is the primary water resource for the Kwale project, and Base said on Tuesday that closing the 8.5 gigaliter dam ahead of the impending wet season was a critical milestone in ensuring sufficient process water was available before plant commissioning in the third quarter of this year.
The Kwale project, which would produce some 4.7-million tons of final product over a 13-year life-of-mine, was currently on schedule for practical completion in the September quarter of 2013.
Base recently confirmed that the project would be exempt from a 35% local equity participation regulation, as this could only be applied to mining licences issued after the regulation came into force in October last year.
