PERTH (miningweekly.com) – The Corunna Downs project, in the Pilbara, has again delivered positive results for iron-ore miner Atlas Iron, as the recent discovery of the Glen Herring prospect further demonstrated the potential of the project.

Atlas MD Ken Brinsden reported on Thursday that recent drilling results from the Glen Herring prospect indicated that Corunna Downs had the potential to grow beyond its current exploration target.

“Corunna Downs is Atlas’ best greenfield exploration discovery both in terms of the potential scale of the resource and its blending capacity. This area is rapidly taking shape as a key growth option for Atlas and we are looking forward to showing what the entire project area can deliver.”

The recent drilling at Glen Herring returned significant results, Brinsden said, including thick intersections of low phosphorus, low alumina direct shipping ore at the northern end of the Corunna Downs corridor, outside the current resource and exploration target area.

Work was now under way to progress this data through the resource estimation process, which would likely be completed by the end of 2015. Further drilling activities would also be undertaken during the full year to further test the exploration target.

The project currently had an exploration target of between 100-million and 150-million tonnes, grading between 55% and 58% iron.
