Artisanal mining activity at the Makala gold camp, near the town of Mongbwalu, in Ituri province, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). A big part of the community programmes of some major mining companies operating in the DRC is to offer alternative livelihood opportunities to artisanal miners through cooperatives, which help local men and women to become autonomous in fields outside artisanal mining, including agriculture and general business.
