PERTH (miningweekly.com) - The Western Australian government has given environmental approval for the development of the 115-million-ton-a-year Anketell multi-user port.
The port would have an initial capacity of 115-million tons a year, and development would occur over 20 years, with the ultimate capacity expected to be around 350-million tons.
The project consisted of a deep-water port with iron-ore stockpiling, transfer and shiploading facilities.
ASX-listed Aquila Resources, which holds a 50% stake in the port development, said the Western Australian Environment Minister had imposed certain conditions and procedures, which the miner believed compared favourably with other recent port approvals in the state.
Combined with the environmental approval granted for Aquila’s West Pilbara iron-ore project, and its associated rail elements, the environmental approval for the Anketell port completed the state’s primary environmental approval requirements for Aquila’s projects in the region.
The port project was now awaiting federal approval.
