Having recognised that the required skills and experiences of graduates entering the sector are changing, event organiser Mining Indaba, working in partnership with advisory firm Brunswick and other companies, has ensured that the 2017 Investing in African Mining Indaba will host its second Young Leaders Career Development Programme (YLCDP) at the Cape Town International Convention Centre on Thursday, February 9.

Mining Indaba marketing and public relations director Phillip LoFaso explains that the YLCDP was introduced to further develop undergraduates and postgraduates in mining-related fields in an attempt to equip the industry for the future.

Mining Indaba affirms that, as the industry recovers, attracting the right skill set to the mining sector, which continues to progress in terms mechanisation, automation and digitisation, will become even more crucial. Thus, LoFaso encourages all mining companies to participate, as well as all other companies that will be attending the 2017 event.

“The programme aims to get recent graduates and those studying fields such as mining engineering, geology and chemical engineering, to meet with human resources (HR) professionals and listen to senior mining executives talk about the industry.”

Further, he states that the YLCDP, together with the Sustainable Development Day initiative, is part of a wider effort to give back to the industry and the continent. Mining Indaba also supports students through a bursary programme and through the Rural Education Access Programme.

Highlights of the YLCDP include a career skills workshop, question-and-answer sessions, and keynote speakers, providing the opportunity for students, university representatives and graduates to interact with HR representatives, recruiters and industry leaders.

Attendance is complimentary for current undergraduate or master’s students at recognised higher education institutions studying a mining-related degree, and for recent graduates – having graduated in December 2014 or later – seeking permanent employment in the mining sector. Those employed in positions relating to the recruitment of talent in the mining sector, as well as those employed in career- development-related roles within a higher education institution, also have complimentary access.

While attendance is free, registration is required. Anyone wishing to attend the YLCDP must complete and submit an application before Monday, January 30. The application must include a letter outlining the applicant’s proven interest in working within the mining sector, a curriculum vitae and an outline of employment to date, as well as a certificate indicating the completion of a recognised university degree or proof of current student status.

Mining Indaba notes that while a specific mining degree is not necessary, applicants must indicate the reason for their interest in attending.

LoFaso adds that, in an effort to provide greater value for those devoted to mining in Africa, the organiser has launched a newsletter called Mining Izindba. “We have already hosted two webcasts where key figures discuss and debate important topics like new legislation and the outlook for specific commodities.”
