TRUMP THUMP

President Trump signed two directives last week that roll back key financial regulations of the Obama era. He has decided to put a match to the Dodd-Frank rule that requires companies to disclose whether their products contain conflict minerals from a war-torn part of Africa. The now-repealed conflict minerals rule is one of several disclosure regulations tucked into Dodd-Frank that required mining companies to disclose payments to foreign governments. But the horse has bolted as far as Europe and the UK are concerned, which followed Dodd-Frank with their own anticorruption legislation. The conflict minerals rule, pushed by human rights groups, focused on transparency around tantalum, tin, gold or tungsten mined in particularly Central Africa in the hope that it would help curb the funding of armed groups.
