South32 adds to board
PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Diversified miner South32 has made two additions to its board of directors, with the appointment of Dr Xiaoling Liu and Karen Wood as independent nonexecutive directors.
Xiaoling will join the South32 board on January 15, and will seek election at the company’s next annual general meeting, while Wood’s appointment will be effective from November 1, and she will seek election at this year’s annual general meeting.
South32 chairperson David Crawford said that the appointment of Xiaoling and Wood would significantly enhance the diversity of the board, with the company’s success being reliant on a strong team made up of a diverse range of experience, skills and perspectives.
Xiaoling is a metallurgical engineer with over 26 years’ experience in management and executive positions. She joined Rio Tinto in 1988 and has held various general manager and MD positions in the smelting division. She was appointed president of primary metal pacific at Rio Tinto’s Alcan operations in 2007, and served as president and CEO of its minerals division between 2011 and 2014, when she retired.
Wood has held various senior global roles with major BHP, and has a strong legal and governance background, having acted as general council and company secretary for Bonlac Foods. Between 2000 and 2012 she served as a member of the Takeovers Panel.
Wood retired from BHP in 2014 and is currently a nonexecutive director of ASX-listed investment company Djerriwarrh Investments.
