To further expand its mining and industrial solutions, global technologies and services supplier Bosch is increasingly targeting markets in Africa and Oceania.

“With positive economic development underpinned by a wealth of raw materials and an increasingly well-educated workforce and growing middle class, Bosch sees great potential for its business in Africa,” says Bosch Mining key account manager for Africa Landry Meya.

Bosch’s mining and industrial solutions are already well established in countries such as Peru, Panama, Brazil, Chile and Argentina. Further, the company believes its credibility and reputation will enable it to leverage its existing strong links with 15 major mining houses in South America – representing 50 projects under way on the continent.

Bosch says it will offer the same service and relationships in Africa as it does everywhere else in the world. The company has been active in Africa since 1906. Apart from its new Ghana branch, Bosch has a presence in South Africa, Egypt, Morocco, Kenya, Angola, Mozambique, Algeria and Nigeria. Depending on future business development, the company plans to increase its presence in Africa in the years to come.

Meya represented the company at the Investing in African Mining Indaba exhibition, held in Cape Town last month.

Although this was Bosch’s first time at the Indaba, the company received a positive response. Meya notes that Bosch’s exhibition attracted more interest than was expected, as more people came to understand that the company offers a full turnkey solution, as opposed to supplying only equipment for the automotive sector.

As part of its exhibition, Bosch showcased a heavy-duty camera, demonstrating the product using a glass tank set up at the stand. The camera is suitable for use at mining opera- tions such as primary crushers and conveyor belt monitoring, and is mounted at the rear of earthmoving equipment to increase visibility, infrared and thermal image activities, perimeter surveillance, apron feeder monitoring and other strategic spots, and on submarines.

Bosch Mining also offers drive systems for conveyor belts, apron feeders and diagnostic equipment components. This includes services for mining and construction vehicles, access control and video surveillance systems, fire-alarm and evacuation systems and building management systems, as well as energy efficient heating and hot-water systems using process heat or solar thermal systems.

Meanwhile, many industry players are not aware that Bosch also has various industrial solutions aimed at electricity conservation. The company develops and provides turnkey storage solutions for power utilities and commercial customers. Bosch offers innovative turnkey stationary energy storage solutions for a sustainable and modern power grid. “Our intelligent solutions maximise the use of renewable energy while ensuring lower costs and a more reliable electricity supply,” Meya says.

While attending the Indaba, Meya noticed that mining companies in Africa are trying to find ways to reduce their electricity consumption and can, therefore, profit from Bosch’s offerings in this field.
