Update – 5 of 13 saved after seismic shock at Sibanye-Stillwater mine
VANCOUVER (miningweekly.com ) – One miner has died and two injured miners have been brought to surface after 13 miners went missing following a fall of ground that was triggered by a seismic shock at Sibanye-Stillwater's Driefontein operations' Masakhane mine, on South Africa's West Rand.
The two employees have been transported to hospital and are in a stable condition.
The JSE- and NYSE-listed miner said two of the five freed employees are still being brought to surface, but are conscious.
Another three employees have been located and are responding to the rescue teams.
Efforts are now focused on locating the remaining employees and safely recovering everyone, the company advised.
The company noted that the Mineral Resources Department and all the unions have been informed and representatives are on site assisting with the rescue efforts.
The JSE- and NYSE-listed miner plans to provide a further update as soon as more information is available.
In 2017, underground production at Driefontein was 426 400 oz.
