Mining equipment and services provider Komatsu has launched its first South African-manufactured Joy reclaim feeder. Joy is the high-productivity mining solutions subsidiary of Komatsu, having been acquired earlier this year in a $3.7-billion deal.

Komatsu states that the feeder is designed specifically to meet the challenges of the local mining environment. Units will be produced at Komatsu’s manufacturing facility in Germiston, Gauteng, using 75% locally sourced materials.

The feeders offer an “efficient and cost-effective” method of blending materials, reclaiming stockpiles and feeding material, claims Komatsu. They feature automatic operation at low speeds, low maintenance costs and high flexibility for blending applications from multiple stockpiles. Joy reclaim feeders require only solid, level-ground conditions for installation and offer high mobility.

The feeders currently operate in a variety of applications, including synthetic-fuel plants, power plant facilities, synthetic-gypsum plants, truck load-out facilities, port load-out facilities and coal mining operations.

Komatsu highlighted the machine’s capabilities at an open-day event at its manufacturing facility last month.

Komatsu marketing and capital sales director Croydon Walters-Gerout says this particular machine was designed and manufactured to customer specification, making it ideal for local conditions.
