QCoal contracts Sedgman to deliver Byerwen mine
JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Mineral processing company Sedgman has been contracted to carry out engineering, procurement and construction at QCoal Group’s greenfield Byerwen coal mine in central Queensland, as well as the delivery of a coal handling and processing plant.
With a combined revenue of almost $100-million, the contracts would see the Cimic Group subsidiary deliver a stockpiling and train load-out facility, with work having already started and concluding in early 2018.
A third contract includes the initial operation of the crushing, stockpiling, which would start this month.
“These contracts demonstrate Sedgman’s ongoing leadership in the coal processing industry and are a testament to the team’s focus on delivering value for our clients,” Cimic Group CEO Michael Wright said on Tuesday.
Sedgman MD Grant Fraser added that by using an innovative modular processing plant design, the company was able to significantly reduce the site construction time and cost for this project. “We are pleased to continue our strong, long term relationship with the QCoal Group and look forward to contributing our core skills in technical delivery and commercial innovation at this project.”
Sedgman has been working with QCoal Group since 2007. The greenfield Byerwen mine site is located 20 km west of Glenden in Queensland’s Bowen basin.
Byerwen is an opencut mining operation, which is permitted to extract up to 15-million tonnes a year of run-of-mine coal to produce ten-million tonnes a year of combined coking and thermal coal products for the export market.
