Platinum mining company Anglo American Platinum (Amplats) last month unveiled a R150-million cogeneration plant that turns waste heat into 5 MW of electricity at its Waterval Smelting Complex, in Rustenburg. The project, which has cut the smelter’s reliance on State power utility Eskom and lowered its carbon footprint, received a R30-million grant from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI). Seen at the official opening are Amplats GM Bayanda Mncwango, Amplats head of process July Ndlovu, Eternity Power’s Reyburn Hendricks, Amplats technical head Gordon Smith, Trade and Industry Minister Rob Davies, Eternity Power’s Jacques Malan and DTI director-general Lionel October.
