PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Gold miner Northern Star Resources is considering solar power for its Jundee gold mine, in Western Australia.

ASX-listed Enerji on Monday announced that the company had been mandated by Northern Star to conduct an evaluation and analysis into the construction of a hybrid solar thermal power station at the mine.

Northern Star also provided a letter of commitment that, subject to the mandated analysis, it would be willing to progress and commit to host, supply waste heat to, and procure power from the hybrid solar thermal power station at Jundee.

Included in the proposed project was a mobile standalone organic Rankin cycle heat-to-power system, which would be connected to Jundee’s baseload gas-fired generators, and would be supplemented with high-quality concentrated solar thermal energy collected using the Solastor system.

The output was considered lower cost, zero-emission electricity.

Northern Star COO Stuart Tonkin said the company was optimistic that the outcome of the evaluation and analysis phases would be positive, demonstrating that the proposed project would deliver economically attractive energy at Jundee, and potentially pave the way for adopting similar clean power solutions across additional projects.
