JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – The Avebury nickel mine, in Tasmania, may soon be reopened under the new ownership of privately owned Dundas Mining.

The company bought the mine from metals miner MMG for A$25-million. The sales agreement was concluded last week.

MMG said in a statement that Dundas Mining planned to bring the Avebury operation, which was placed on care and mainteance in 2009, back into production “as soon as possible”.

“Dundas Mining is committed to a restart of the mine and MMG is confident that the sale will reinvigorate the Zeehan area, by providing new jobs and economic benefit to the region,” said MMG GM for ASEA operations, Gus Gomes.

He reitratred that MMG remained committed to Tasmania and the local community through the Rosebery operation.
