With a focus on safety and supporting its customers, the process of integrating diversified industrial-use products and services provider Komatsu and high-productivity mining solutions provider Joy Global has begun, following the conclusion of a $3.7-billion deal in April.

On May 8, executive leadership, elected officials and hundreds of Milwaukee-based employees celebrated the official launch of Komatsu Mining at the company’s office and manufacturing facility, kicking off the integration process to align the organisation and operation for the most effective customer support.

Retaining its headquarters in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in the US, Joy Global, which has offices in Germiston, Gauteng, South Africa, was acquired by Komatsu’s US subsidiary, Komatsu America, and will operate as a subsidiary of Tokyo, Japan-based Komatsu.

“Uniting our global teams brings endless opportunities for our customers, employees and the industry,” Komatsu Mining president and CEO Jeffrey Dawes, formerly the leader of Komatsu Latin America, said at the ceremony.

“We couldn’t be more pleased to commit to keeping the headquarters of Komatsu Mining right here in Milwaukee. This has been a great home to us through the years, and it will continue to be as we move forward together as part of the Komatsu organisation.”

Komatsu Mining’s plan is to build on the strength of Komatsu and Joy Global’s cultures, including their “unwavering” belief in safety first and passion for providing “innovative” solutions, to become an “unrivalled” mining solutions and services provider.

Komatsu intends to leverage the best practices of both companies while aligning the organisation and operation for the most effective customer support.

“Together, we will continue to promote and invest in the P&H, Joy and Montabert brands, working to expand the technologies, services and solutions that help our customers [enhance] efficiencies, improve safety and increase production,” states Komatsu Mining’s website.

“The combination of our Komatsu-brand surface mining equipment with the P&H, Joy and Montabert brands of surface and underground products will allow us to offer [our customers] a complete range of mining solutions,” says Komatsu president and CEO Tetsuji Ohashi.

The close of the transaction adds more than 10 000 people with deep knowledge and experience in the mining industry to the Komatsu team, bringing the company’s global staff complement to more than 57 000 employees.

Consumables Show

With a focus on helping customers extend equipment life and lower operational costs, Joy Global hosted a Consumables Show at its JoySmart Services Centre in eMalahleni from March 28 to 30. As the original- equipment manufacturer, Joy Global engineers or selects each Joy service product and consumable to meet the company’s exacting application and design standards, ensuring the best system performance.

Consumable and upgrade components available for customers’ specific applications include: shuttle car tyres, which are 32-ply load-rated with sidewall reinforcement to reduce failure risk; Optima Series dipper upgrades to improve shovel productivity, decrease adjustments and extend maintenance intervals; continuous miner crawler chains with grouser configurations to deliver improved sumping forces and turning performance to drive up production rates; shuttle car conveyor chains with an integrated chain and sprocket design to decrease downtime and increase component life; Delta Series crawler shoes proven in the most extreme mining environments, engineered as a complete system to ensure all component lives are enhanced; and Joy genuine filters and elements that offer protection to increase hydraulic system life.

The company also highlighted Montabert drifters and drifter conversions, which can provide up to 60% overall savings on unit operating costs, owing to longer maintenance intervals, lower costs per repair and reduced consumable consumption. Proven benefits include increasing drill bit life up to 47%, increasing shank life up to 60% and decreasing noise and vibration levels to improve the operator environment.
