TORONTO (miningweekly.com) – The CEO of US fertiliser and phosphates company Mosaic, James Prokopanko, will take medical leave to undergo surgery to treat cancer, the Plymouth-based fertiliser maker said on Thursday.

CFO Larry Stranghoener would step in as interim CEO, beginning June 1, the Plymouth-based company said in a statement.

Prokopanko is expected to return later this summer.

Prokopanko had in March revealed that he was undergoing chemotherapy.

The company also announced that Stranghoener, who has been Mosaic's CFO since its formation in 2004, would retire at the end of the year. The company named Richard Mack, currently serving as general counsel and corporate secretary, to replace Stranghoener starting in June.

After serving as interim CEO, Stranghoener would move into a role as executive VP for strategy and business development until his official retirement.
