JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Diversified miner Rio Tinto has launched a recruitment drive for more than 100 new roles at its bauxite mines on the western Cape York Peninsula in Queensland.

The opportunities are available across Rio Tinto’s operations at Weipa including existing mines at Andoom and East Weipa and the new Amrun mine located south of the Embley river between Weipa and Aurukun.

The Amrun project includes a range of infrastructure to support mining, including a processing plant and port near Boyd Bay, a dam, roads and tailings storage facility. A ferry terminal on the Hey river will transport workers from Weipa to the mine.

Rio Tinto said on Tuesday positions for electrical and instrumentation technicians, operators, plant fitters and maintenance personnel were on offer. Some roles would start immediately at Amrun, others would gradually take effect between 2018 and 2019.

The Amrun mine will have initial output of 22.8-million tonnes a year and will replace production from the depleting East Weipa mine. The project’s design provides options for future expansion to 50-million tonnes a year.
