US-based mining equipment manufacturer Joy Global recently debuted the Joy 16TD hard rock mining truck, its newest offering for the global mining market.

Based on the popular DT-1804 truck model, the 16TD features lower hood lines for improved visibility, a digital operator display, shorter turning radius, ground level maintenance and faster speed ramps. The 16TD is commercially available and replaces the DT-1804 model.

The truck has a payload of 16 000 kg and a volume of 8 m3. Its Cummins QSB 6.7 diesel engine can produce 164 kW at 2 200 rpm, and the tank has a fuel capacity of 338 ℓ.

The truck’s hydraulic functions are powered by a variable displacement piston pump with a load-sensing closed centre circuit design, ensuring optimal efficiency, and a hydraulic tank capacity of 347 ℓ.

It has two double-acting four-stage dump cylinders, as well as two double-acting single- stage steering cylinders.

Double-acting hydraulic cylinders have a port at each end, supplying hydraulic fluid for both the retraction and extension of the piston. The configuration is relatively expensive and noisy, compared with a single-acting cylinder, but it is generally more efficient over a longer period of time.

The first machine came off the production line at the end of September and was meant to be displayed at Minería 2015 Mining Expo, held in Acapulco, Mexico, from October 7 to 10, but was immediately sold to a customer.

Joy Global Canada – where the new truck was produced – GM Josh Wagner says “[the] hard rock ready trucks and loaders are designed with operator safety, reliability and ease of maintenance in mind, and the 16TD was built to enhance those features”.

Montabert Acquisition
Meanwhile, Joy Global acquired hydraulic equipment manufacturer Montabert in June. The French company specialises in the design, production and distribution of hydraulic demolition and drilling equipment for use in mining and construction.

Adding Montabert’s products to Joy Global’s world-class offerings provides advantages for both companies.

Montabert will continue to develop industry- leading technology and products, which will continue to be distributed by its original equipment and dealer networks. Joy Global will be able to strengthen its hard rock business by increasing its drilling products range.

“Montabert’s rock drill products and rock breakers complement our expanded offerings for the hard rock market, an exciting growth area for Joy Global,” says Joy Global CEO and president Ted Doheny. “We look forward to breaking new ground with Montabert’s products in the mining market and beyond.”
