Fluor volunteers recently packed more than 10 000 Stop Hunger Now hunger relief meals in support of Ikageng AIDS Ministry in Soweto. The Ikageng Ministry is a nonprofit organization that cares for more than 900 orphaned and vulnerable children affected by HIV and AIDS around the Soweto area.

“Fluor has a long tradition of community service around the world,” said Alejandro Escalona, Fluor’s general manager and volunteer who joined in the meal packing. “Our employees are socially responsible and committed to making a sustainable and positive impact in communities.”

Each meal pack contains a nutritious protein mix of soya, rice, vegetable mix and a fortified sachet of 23 essential minerals and vitamins specifically formulated to combat malnutrition, complying with UNICEF standards. The 10 300 meals packed at the event will feed 39 children, five meals a week for a year. The beneficiaries of the meals are child-headed households supported by Ikageng Ministry.

“We are grateful to Fluor for the meals donation,” said Carol Dyantyi, Ikageng founder and director. “Food is essential to our beneficiaries, and this donation will enable them to attend school and take their medicines on full stomachs.”

Fluor is a global engineering and construction company. In 2014, Fluor donated a delivery van to Stop Hunger Now for meal distribution. To date, the van has delivered more than 300 000 meals annually, reaching more than 5000 communities.

Fluor Cares, Fluor’s formal employee volunteer programme, is the heart of the company’s community involvement efforts. Last year, employees volunteered approximately 44 000 hours to help enrich the lives of those in their communities through Fluor’s focus areas of education, social services, community and economic development and the environment.
