STOCKHOLM - A fire broke out in a mine in Garpenberg, in northern Sweden, forcing between 70 and 80 people to seek shelter underground, police said on Thursday.

"A machine has caught fire in a mine in Garpenberg," the police said in a statement. "The workers in the mine have sought shelter in an emergency room."

News agency TT quoted police as saying they did not believe those trapped underground were in danger.

"The mine has a number of different emergency rooms supplied with oxygen and other necessities."
