PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Iron-ore major Fortescue Metals has awarded project house Downer Edi a A$720-million mining contract at Christmas Creek mine, in Western Australia.

Downer is currently employed as the mining services contractor at the Christmas Creek 1 mine, while Macmahon Holdings performs mining services at the Christmas Creek 2 mine.

However, Fortescue has taken the decision to consolidate the mining services at the operation into a single contract that will start in April 2015. The new consolidated contract will include drill and blast, as well as load and haul of overburden and iron-ore.

The new contract will run until the end of September 2016, and included the option for an additional year.
