TORONTO (miningweekly.com) – Canada's largest independent diamond producer Dominion Diamond Corp, which is also the third-largest producer globally by value, on Thursday advised that it had contained a fire that had broken out during a planned outage in the Ekati mine’s process plant.

The Toronto-headquartered company, which owns an 89%-stake in Ekati, reported that there were no injuries resulting from the incident early on Thursday morning.

The company advised that it would provide further information as it became available.

During the fiscal first quarter ended April 30, Ekati lifted output 34% year-on-year, recovering 1.1-million carats from 1-million tonnes of ore processed. The operation was busy ramping up production from the Misery Main kimberlite pipe, where it declared commercial production during the period.
