US and Luxembourg-headquartered asteroid mining company Deep Space Industries (DSI) and Mexican commercial space company MxSpace signed an historic agreement on September 29 that will mark the beginning of a partnership between the companies to promote the development of new commercial space technologies and business ventures.

Mexico national space agency Agencia Espacial Mexicana (AEM) director-general Dr Francisco Mendieta and executives from MxSpace and DSI took part in the signing ceremony at the MxSpace booth on the trade show floor of the sixty-seventh International Astronautical Congress, in Guadalajara, Mexico.

“The development and eventual settlement of space will be a combined effort of many countries, companies and people,” says DSI board chairperson Rick Tumlinson.

He remarks that partnerships like this one are an important step in developing a “thriving, international ecosystem of space companies and organisations” working together for humanity’s benefit.

Tumlinson elaborates that the agreement between MxSpace and DSI will focus on ways the two companies can help support each other in the near and long term. This includes sharing and promoting each other’s technology products, collaboration on proposals and seeking joint funding and business opportunities.

Additionally, Tumlinson will be a panellist at the Mexican Capacities in Space Science Forum, which will be held at Expo Guadalajara, in Guadalajara, on September 30.

“We are very excited to partner with DSI to help position Mexico as a global player in the emerging space resources industry,” states MxSpace president Jose Oldak.

Moreover, he comments that just as MxSpace has been paving the way for Mexico to enter the global satellite industry, this new relationship will introduce “cutting-edge” asteroid mining and space operations technology to the Mexican space industry and help commercialise Mexico’s “most innovative” space technologies for markets worldwide.

Additionally, Oldak highlights that the companies will jointly support domestic and international regulatory and policy positions of mutual interest. This includes working towards a future in which all nations play a part in space exploration, development and industrialisation.

“DSI is thrilled at the opportunity to work with our southern neighbours to advance the discussion and understanding of important international policy topics governing the uses of space,” adds DSI general counsel Sagi Kfir.

He believes that the partnership between DSI and MxSpace will help promote global awareness of the benefits of space resources and ensure that Mexico is well prepared to participate in this sector of the growing international space economy.

DSI and MxSpace state that they hope to foster collaboration among international partners in North America and around the world. They state that such collaboration has proven to be a valuable tool in ensuring that customers and partners are offered the most reliable and advanced technical solutions possible.
