TORONTO (miningweekly.com) – German fertiliser maker K+S Potash Canada on Wednesday signed a long-term volume-based transportation contract with rail operator Canadian Pacific (CP) to move potash from the C$4.1-billion Legacy mine, near Moose Jaw and Regina, in Saskatchewan, to a Western Canadian port for export to overseas destinations.

K+S and CP were forming a long-standing partnership to ensure the transportation of potash from the Legacy site to local and international clients was secure and competitive.

Production from the mine was planned to start in the summer of 2016.

To accommodate the transportation needs of the Legacy mine, CP would build an exclusive rail spur. CP also offered competitive opportunities in existing and identified markets for K+S.

"The capacity, flexibility and market access of CP's network on our Western corridor, as well as efficient route options into the US, ensures a growth opportunity for both companies,” CP president and COO Keith Creel said.
