This new R474-million chrome recovery plant at Anglo American Platinum’s Amandelbult mine, near Thabazimbi, in Limpopo, produces two grades of concentrated chromite, one metallurgical and the other chemical. A network of 300 spirals gravitationally extract chromite from the upper group two ore mined at the Tumela and Dishaba platinum-group metals (PGM) mines and its recovery adds value to the existing PGMs basket. The plant, which is co-owned and co-operated with the local community, is designed to process 700 000 t/y but will operate at between 600 000 t/y and 650 000 t/y going forward.
