TORONTO (miningweekly.com) – Canadian uranium miner Cameco CEO Tim Gitzel was this week appointed to US fertiliser giant The Mosaic Company’s board, filling a vacancy left by Harold MacKay’s retirement.

Gitzel had served as Cameco's president and CEO since 2011. He joined Cameco, one of the world's largest uranium producers, in 2007 as senior VP and COO. Before joining Cameco, Gitzel was executive VP for the mining business unit of Areva, in Paris, France.

Gitzel currently serves as chairperson of the World Nuclear Association, the cochairperson of the 2013 Mastercard Memorial Cup and is a governor with Junior Achievement of Saskatchewan.

He is a past president of the Saskatchewan Mining Association and a former director of the Mining Association of Canada and has served on numerous boards. A native of Saskatchewan, Gitzel lives with his family in Saskatoon.

"Tim has built an impressive career in the mining industry, and the board looks forward to benefiting from his experience and leadership. We are particularly pleased to welcome a new director with such deep ties to Saskatchewan, where Mosaic's primary potash operations reside," Mosaic chairperson Robert Lumpkins said.
