JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Anglo American Platinum (Amplats) and the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) have agreed to extend the ongoing Section 189 consultation process for a further 30 days to allow sufficient time for an appropriate conclusion.

The parties now expected the process to conclude by the end of April.

Amplats CEO Chris Griffith reported that, while progress had been made on the back of “constructive discussions with stakeholders”, the volume of information and data had necessitated the extension.

Amplats, together with the DMR and organised labour bodies, the National Union of Mineworkers, the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union, the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa and United Association of South Africa, had been engaged in consultation for the past 60 days as agreed at a tripartite meeting on January 28.

At this meeting, the parties had resolved to postpone the continuation of Amplats’ proposed Section 189 process under the Labour Relations Act to allow for a detailed consultation process to take place.

This followed an announcement by the JSE-listed miner in mid-January that it would, under Section 189, undertake a restructuring programme that could see it cut 14 000 jobs.

Amplats would now approach the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration to postpone the continuation of the Section 189 by a further 30 days to enable the bilateral consultation processes to be concluded in the extended period.

“We will continue to engage constructively with all our stakeholders and will communicate progress updates as and when appropriate,” commented Griffith.
