In a national radio debate in which all key South African labour representatives took part, South African Broadcasting Corporation’s AMLive anchor Tsepiso Makwetla was forced to reiterate that Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) had been asked to join the debate repeatedly, but had not come forward. Later, when Minerals Minister Susan Shabangu and the country’s key labour representatives met officially at the offices of the Department of Mineral Resources, AMCU was again not represented. Mining Weekly cartoonist Darlene’s plea to AMCU is to join South Africa Incorporated in restoring full collaboration to the mining industry, which has the wherewithal to lever new growth across the entire national economy. Putting South Africa first will benefit all South Africans well into the future and float all boats, including AMCU’s.
