PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Diversified miner Xstrata has extinguished an underground fire at its Blakefield South operation over the weekend, a company spokesperson told Mining Weekly Online on Monday.
The fire, which broke out last week, forced Xstrata to cease production at the 7,5-million-ton a year operation in New South Wales.
James Rickards said that Xstrata Coal would introduce coolants into the mine’s affected area by the end of the week.
“This is a positive step forward for the controlled management of the fire and we will continue to be guided by the real-time gas monitoring data as to when we may be able to re-enter the underground to assess the damage,” he said.
Employees at the Blakefield South operation would likely be redeployed to other Xstrata Coal operations until the mine was reactivated.
