What are the key products & services that your company is exhibiting at Electra Mining?
The supply, servicing and maintenance of BREDEL peristaltic pumps
What are its applications?
Pumping of slurries, dosing applications and thickener underflow
What makes the product unique?
Bredel’s patented SPX direct-coupled compact design combines the size and simplicity of a close-coupled pump with the reliability and ease of maintenance of a bare shaft design.
No other hose pump combines such a small footprint with a fully-protected drive. In fact, the gearbox plugs directly into the pumphead, creating an innovative buffer zone that provides additional protection to the pump bearings and gearbox. This design also allows for trouble-free alignment and fitting of the rotor.
Where was the product developed?
By Bredel Hose Pumps BV, Delden. The Netherlands
Has the product been imported or manufactured locally?
Imported, as above
On which projects, if any, has the product been used successfully?
In recent months, the Amandelbult platinum mine and Potgietersrus platinum mine upgrades produced a combined R3 million order in peristaltic pumps, closely followed by Zimplats Ngezi (R1.2 million) and Tati Nickel Botswana (R800 000).
Sales in the non-mining sector are also breaking records with more than R3 million worth of peristaltic pump orders being placed by Rand Water alone in the past year. In a R1 million order, 17 SPX pumps – ranging in capacity from SPX50 to SPX100 – were supplied to Rand Water's Suikerbos Plant near Johannesburg in July this year, while in August Watson-Marlow delivered eight SPX50 pumps (R500 000 value) to Rand Water in Vereeniging. These pumps will all be used in lime slurry and silica dosing applications.
Is the product exportable?
Yes, we export pumps to the rest of Africa
Background on the company marketing the product?
Watson-Marlow and Bredel products have been marketed in South Africa by Watson-Marlow Bredel SA since April 2003. Watson-Marlow Bredel, part of the London Stock Exchange listed Spirax-Sarco Group, has been the world leader in peristaltic pumps for more than 50 years, and is the first manufacturer to offer a five-year warranty on its 520, 620 and 720 ranges of peristaltic pumps. A recent report by global growth consulting company Frost & Sullivan shows Watson-Marlow Bredel as Europe’s number one positive displacement pump brand.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
The peristaltic pump market is growing considerably. What's even more encouraging is that we are taking away a lot of business from the suppliers of progressive cavity (PC), centrifugal and double diaphragm pumps. Unlike other pumps, the peristaltic has no valves, seals or glands. This reduces maintenance and the risk of breakdown. The only routine maintenance is changing the tube or hose, which can be done by the process operator, while a change of fluid simply requires cleaning or changing the tube or hose.
