WA govt gives nod to Image mine
PERTH (miningweekly.com) – The Western Australian government has granted junior Image Resource environmental approval to develop its Boonanarring mineral sands project.
CEO Collis Thorp said on Monday that the Ministerial approval was a significant milestone for the project approvals process, and progressed the project towards production.
The Ministerial approval extended to the construction and operation of a mine and to the modification of the Brand Highway to provide safe access to the project site.
The Boonanarring and Atlas deposits form part of Image’s North Perth Basin mineral sands project, and has a total resource of 32.3-million tonnes grading 8.1% heavy minerals.
The project would involve an opencut mineral sands operation, mining at a rate of 3.3-million tonnes a year over a projected ten-year mine life. Yearly production from the mine was expected to average 89 000 t of ilmenite, 5 400 t of leucoxene, 9 000 t of rutile and 32 400 t of zircon for a combined annual production of these heavy minerals of 135 900 t.
