JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – JSE-listed Village Main Reef has resumed full production at its Consolidated Murchison (Cons Murch) mine after reinstating the 849 workers it dismissed for participating in an unprotected strike.
The gold and antimony mine lost 17 of the 63 working days for the quarter, as a result of a go-slow by National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) members.
Village said it had agreed with NUM that the reinstated employees would work in the lost production and that “behavioural” problems would be addressed.
Management has reserved its right to take action against those employees who were responsible for initiating the go-slow, the company added.
The dispute arose over historic overtime payments claimed by employees resulting from their employment at Cons Murch, before Village bought the mine.
