Two workers died at Anglo Platinum’s (Angloplat’s) mines at the weekend, the National Union of Mineworkers said on Tuesday.

South Africa’s biggest union said that one worker died at the world’s biggest platinum producer’s Mogalakwena and another at the Amandelbult mine, near Rustenburg.

Angloplat spokesperson Simon Tebele was not immediately available to confirm the deaths.

New CEO Neville Nicolau had said in May that worker safety was the company’s top priority.

"Safety is our moral licence to operate," he said at the time.

The company operated deep, hard rock mines in South Africa, which were some of the most dangerous in the world.
