Work-at-height equipment and allied services supplier Goscor Hi-Reach introduced a new telescopic boom, Africa’s tallest self-propelled ‘super boom’, onto the local market last month, making lifting and transporting heavy loads to high locations easier for mining and construction companies and related industries.

The Genie SX-180 boom lift has a working height of 57 m and a horizontal reach of 24.4 m. It is a new lifting solution that offers rugged reliability, fast manoeuvrability and easy maintenance and transport, says Goscor Hi-Reach MD Dean Jones.

“The SX-180 next-generation telescopic boom lift has been specifically engineered to meet the highest work-at-height transportation, installation, erection and maintenance requirements across a broad market spectrum, from the mining, general construction and chemicals industries to utilities, airports, harbours and refineries,” he says.

Jones tells Mining Weekly that the boom lift extends almost 10 m higher than any other self-propelled boom lift and can be fully extended or retracted in five minutes.

The boom lift also has increased platform capacity that enhances productivity and safety. “Two people can work efficiently and comfortably on the boom lift, with easy access to gear and equipment on the spacious 2.44 m × 0.91 m platform, which has an unrestricted load capacity of 340 kg. The platform also has a 3.05 m rotating jib to facilitate precise positioning of workers and gear. The unit provides the perfect working envelope, ideal for the most extreme access jobs,” says Jones.

Further, the Genie SX-180’s controls have been fitted with new toggle switches and fully proportional jib and boom controls on the platform, while ground controls have also been enhanced with a new intuitive-function diagram layout, complete with tactile membrane switches.

Jones says the boom lift can be powered through new-generation Perkins engines or Deutz 74-hp engines and can be driven at full height. “Travel speeds vary, depending on boom position and range. Further, a 225 ℓ fuel tank for longer running time and a 7.5 KW generator are standard on the machine.”

The boom lift’s extendable and retractable X-chassis is engineered to provide stability on the job and facilitate transport. The machine’s axles are adaptable to specific heavy job-site requirements and can be extended from 2.49 m up to 5 m, says Jones.

“Heavy-gauge steel box-section frames provide stable and safe foundations when the axles are extended. Once retracted, the axles are also easily stored in the undercarriage for easy transport.”

Jones tells Mining Weekly that the boom lift’s platform height, with balanced machine weight and compact stored dimensions, makes it possible to transport the boom lift without requiring overwidth or abnormal load permits.

Maintaining the boom lift is simple, as it features easy-to-reach operation systems and inspection points, with components that can be removed and installed quickly to keep services and downtime to a minimum, he says, adding that the boom is also available as a rental option through sister company Goscor Access Rental.
