The Protection Of Personal Information (POPI)
UCT Law@work, a self-funded unit within the UCT Faculty of Law, is pleased to present a two-day seminar on the Protection of Personal Information Act, which has been signed into law.
SEMINAR DATE:
4 and 5 March 2015
ABOUT THE SEMINAR
Most businesses collect and use personal information for one reason or another. The processing of personal information will soon be subject to the Protection of Personal Information Act, which will place many new obligations on businesses ranging from obtaining the consent of the data subject before utilising personal information to ensuring that personal information is secure. A new Information Regulator will be established to enforce the Act and non-compliant businesses may be faced with fines of up to R10 million.
The Protection of Personal Information Act has been signed into law by the President. All companies will have one year from the commencement of the Act to ensure that they comply. Of course, most if not all businesses will need at least that long to put the necessary processes and information technology structures in place.
Join us for a two-day seminar aimed at explaining the scope of the Act and giving guidelines on how to ensure that your business complies. After attending this seminar you should have a firm grasp on the scope of the Act and how to start a compliance exercise at your business.
WHO WILL BENEFIT FROM THIS SEMINAR?
Information officers, attorneys, in-house legal advisors and compliance officers.
WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT?
On Day 1 we will analyse the provisions of the Act by breaking it down into the duties it creates for your business. We will also discuss information security, processes and procedures, and change management.
On Day 2 we will give you some ideas on how to implement the Act. We will do some practical exercises to help illustrate how the Act works and how to react if the Information Regulator contacts you.
