Tharisa posts record monthly PGM output
JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – JSE-listed Tharisa has posted record monthly production from its South African mine, delivering 12 874 oz of platinum-group metals (PGMs) in March and exceeding the previous record of 10 593 oz, produced in January.
The company added in a production update on Tuesday that it had lifted output for the quarter ended March 31, to 33 000 oz, compared with the 24 400 oz produced in the preceding three months.
“We had an excellent quarter, with markedly improved mining following the changes in the first quarter and continued progress in optimising our processing to improve PGM recoveries and deliver higher-margin chrome concentrates.
“The improvement in mining has also enabled the Genesis plant to process mined ore as well as reprocessing commissioning tails. The processing of 100% mined ore through the Genesis plant is now planned for the third quarter, while the Voyager plant continues to operate on 100% mined ore,” CEO Phoevos Pouroulis said in a statement.
He further noted that both process and mechanical reliability optimisation projects were successfully concluded during the period and, given continued depressed commodity prices, the focus had been on maximising PGM recoveries and higher value-add chemical and foundry-grade chrome concentrates.
“It is pleasing to report that the PGM recoveries surpassed expectations at the Voyager plant with a recovery of 78.8% being achieved in March [and we have] demonstrated that we are on track to achieve our steady-state production,” said Pouroulis.
Tharisa was expected to release its financial results for the six months ended March 31 on June 17.
