PERTH (miningweekly.com) – The Liberian Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has granted dual-listed iron-ore developer Tawana Resources approval for the scoping study and terms of reference for an environmental- and social-impact assessment (ESIA) for its planned Mofe Creek project.

The ASX- and JSE-listed junior said on Tuesday that the approval represented a key step forward in the ESIA process and formed part of the company’s commitment to obtaining an environmental permit and mining licence for Mofe Creek.

“We recognise that securing the permits necessary for the establishment of operations at Mofe Creek is critical to our commitment to rapidly advance the project towards development. Obtaining this latest approval from the EPA, again in such a short timeframe, marks another important step forward in the overall permitting process,” said Tawana executive chairperson and CEO Wayne Richards.

A scoping study into the Mofe Creek project had confirmed it could produce some 2.5-million tonnes a year over a 14-year mine life based on the maiden mineral resource of 61.9-million tonnes, grading 33% iron.

A prefeasibility study into the Mofe Creek project was currently under way.
