Tanzania seeks details on miner’s coal-to-power plan
JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – JSE- and Aim-listed Kibo Mining reported on Thursday that it would present its Rukwa coal-to-power project proposal to the Tanzania Ministry of Energy and Minerals on February 22.
CEO Louis Coetzee said the company had received a formal invitation to present details of the project at a meeting that would also be attended by the Tanzanian Electricity Supply Commission.
Through a subsidiary of its majority-owned Mzuri Energy, Kibo signed a memorandum of understanding in 2012 with an Asian conglomerate to develop a 250 MW to 350 MW power station alongside the Rukwa coal project, which is located near Mbeya in south-west Tanzania.
Mzuri Coal aimed to enter into a long-term coal offtake agreement with the coal-fired plant developer.
“The written invitation from the Ministry emphasises the large scope for power generation in Tanzania, the acute need for a stable power supply, and the fact that the demand for electricity continues to grow at a fast rate,” said Coetzee.
