TORONTO (miningweekly.com) - London-listed Talvivaara produced the first metal sulphides on Wednesday, from its new €250-million recovery plant, the firm reported in an emailed statement.

Mining operations got under way at the company's world-first bioheapleaching nickel mine in April this year, followed by the start-up of materials handling and bioheapleaching processes in July.

Talvivaara plans to ramp up production levels to 33 000 t/y of nickel and 60 000 t/y of zinc by 2010, and is targeting output of 20 000 t of nickel and 37 000 t of zinc next year.

“The successful start-up of metals recovery demonstrates that the entire production process at Talvivaara, including bioheapleaching, is now operational,” the company said.

Throughput and production volumes are expected to remain low for what is left of 2008, as the company will focus on optimising the various processes for commercial production, which is expected to be achieved from the beginning of 2009.
