Integrated solutions provider and equipment supplier TAKRAF Africa will put on display its innovative primary mineral sizer in Hall 9 Stand G03.

The sizer will be from the Extreme class range of TAKRAF sizers, able to handle material typically considered to be outside the application window of a standard sizer, owing to its ability to handle material with high levels of hardness and abrasiveness and large fragment sizes.

TAKRAF Africa will also be celebrating a major milestone in its history of serving sub-Saharan Africa, with next year, 2019, marking 100 years since the founder of the TAKRAF Africa heritage, Edward L Bateman, assumed control of the Allis-Chalmers agency in South Africa. Today, trading as TAKRAF Africa, after Tenova bought the Bateman Group in 2012, the company is part of the global Tenova TAKRAF group, a leading supplier of integrated solutions worldwide.

In addition to its century-long contribution to major projects across Africa, TAKRAF Africa is a Level 2 broad-based black economic- empowerment company, a reflection of the company’s commitment to empowering and uplifting local communities and economies.

“Such a commitment is a TAKRAF Africa philosophy – a way of doing business that is carried out throughout all our projects,” says TAKRAF Africa technologies GM Richard Späth.

As a result, initiatives, ranging from small enterprise and supplier development, to skills development and philanthropic initiatives, are leaving a lasting legacy on the communities in which TAKRAF Africa operates.

“Five black-owned cooperatives assisted with start-up funding, our bursary and learnership scheme, which currently sponsors 20 students and 6 learners, and the donation of a water tank to an Mpumalanga hospital and library facilities for the Maropeng Primary School, in Gauteng, are just some of our more recent community development activities,” adds Späth.

TAKRAF Africa’s comprehensive offering enables it to service its clients literally from pit to port, and includes openpit mining, bulk and specialised materials handling, comminution, air environmental services and the DELKOR solid/liquid separation technologies.

A key differentiator is the total product life cycle support for all equipment sold by itself, as well as that supplied by other original-equipment manufacturers. Services include spares supply through maintenance and monitoring programmes, to equipment repairs, refurbishments and upgrades.

The sizer equipment to be seen at Electra Mining is the latest addition to TAKRAF Africa’s comprehensive suite of crushing equipment and was developed with a special focus on attributes, such as ease of maintenance, reduced downtime and long equipment service life. The product range offers throughputs of up to 12 000 t/h for the primary applications and 3 500 t/h for secondary and tertiary applications.

Boasting a high throughput combined with a compact design, TAKRAF primary sizers are versatile machines for comminution of soft, as well as hard and challenging materials. Their low height profile makes them well suited to underground mining applications, and they are also widely applied in openpit operations.

Ongoing Innovation
TAKRAF Africa’s in-house expertise is supported by its commitment to ongoing innovation and technology acquisition.

In addition to the sizer, other recent develop- ments include the semi-mobile Bradford breaker, which offers the benefits of the tradi- tional breaker in a more compact machine. Already in operation at two junior coal miners, the breaker offers low capital cost combined with ease of transport, installation and maintenance – features that are crucial to the junior and small miners who are increasingly exploiting the small coal resources that remain.

TAKRAF Africa’s new-design Redler chain conveyors are being installed for a major producer in the fast-moving consumer goods market. This breakthrough development combines the proven Redler brand with a lighter, more cost-effective design of the casing. This eliminates the time-consuming welding process and has reduced the delivery time by up to four weeks.

With its proud, century-long track record featuring many of the high profile projects in sub-Saharan Africa, TAKRAF Africa continues to add milestone references, such as the complex materials handling project for Eskom’s flagship Kusile power station project, in Mpumalanga.

TAKRAF Africa is at an advanced stage in the completion of four execution contracts for the multibillion-rand project, three of which were awarded in 2010 – the stockyard, limestone and terrace handling systems – with the fourth, the coal truck offloading system, awarded in 2017. In combination, these packages comprise the largest materials handling contract to be undertaken by TAKRAF Africa.

Other major projects currently under way in South Africa include a fast-track contract for a tippler upgrade and conveyors for a power station, as well as an order for a wagon tippler and dust extraction system for an iron-ore port terminal.

The recently completed project for an in-plant conveyor system for the new milling/crushing facility at a gold mine in Guinea is indicative of the growing demand for the company’s product offering from Central and West Africa.

TAKRAF Africa’s air environmental services also continue to experience buoyant demand across a wide range of commodities, with innovative and holistic approaches to pollution control.

The boiler emissions abatement plant project for Impala Platinum is believed to be the first of its kind in Africa. The project comprises the installation of an integrated plant, capable of efficiently and effectively removing pollutants, such as fly ash particulate, sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides from the boiler flue gas, exceeding the requirements of South Africa’s National Environmental Management: Air Quality Act.

Following the signing of a distribution licence with US-based DSI, TAKRAF Africa is supplying the DSI fugitive dust reduction systems to two power stations, while there is growing interest from clients in the DSI DustTamer wind fence for stockpile protection.
