SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT has won a 4-year contract worth a total of €84 million to operate and maintain two of the wastewater treatment plants at Gabal El Asfar1 in Cairo. This contract was won in a consortium2 with three Egyptian companies: DHCU, ARCOM and ICAT3. SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT will be in charge of operating the facilities and their rehabilitation, a testament to the confidence that CAPW4 has in Degrémont’s operating know-how and its international expertise in water treatment.

The rehabilitation requirement serves to ensure that the water discharged into the environment is of the highest quality, to protect the canal water near the plant and in the Nile Delta.

Located in Cairo, Gabal El Asfar is the biggest wastewater treatment facility on the east bank of the Nile. It has a processing capacity of more than 1,400,000 m3 a day, including a cogeneration plant fuelled by anaerobic sludge digestion that produces up to 65% of the power needed to run the facility.

Marie-Ange Debon, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT in charge of the International Division says: “SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT and its Egyptian partners are delighted to bring their expertise to Cairo to improve the water of the Nile. We are proud of the confidence shown by CAPW to operate the region’s biggest wastewater treatment plant.”

Through its subsidiary Degrémont, SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT has been present in Egypt since 1948, where it currently employs 345 people. To date, 70% of Greater Cairo’s potable water is produced by facilities built by Degrémont (Fostat, Mostorod, Amerya, Ghiza, etc). In 2007, SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT won the Gabal El Asfar Optimisation contract (300,000 m3/day), and in 2008 the contract to expand the Alexandria East plant (800,000 m3/day). In 2014, the Group also entered into a contract to operate and maintain the Gabal El Asfar 2A wastewater treatment plant.
