JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Diamond producer Petra Diamonds on Wednesday reported that the strike at its Sedibeng operations, near Kimberley in South Africa, was still continuing.

Petra Diamonds spokesperson James Duncan said that the company was in discussions with unions.

The strike action started on September 8, as wage negotiations grinded to a halt, and an estimated 69% of the mine’s workforce was taking part in the strike action.

The National Union of Mineworkers has reported that workers were demanding a salary increase of R1 050 a month as well as a housing allowance of R1 000 a month, while Petra Diamonds was offering a 5% wage increase.

The company said its offer was in line with the industry standard.
