JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – An employee was killed in a fall-of-ground incident at Gold Fields’ South Deep mine following a -1.5 magnitude seismic event on Saturday.

South Deep management has suspended all destress mining activities and notified the Department of Mineral Resources. Owing to ongoing seismic activity in the area, the on-site inspection has been deferred until later on Monday.

“Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased. Management will do everything possible to support them in this hour of need.

“While this is the first fatality at South Deep since May 2015, our review will reassess all safety protocols, procedures and standards,” CEO Nick Holland said.
