Zambian aggregate producer Scirocco Enterprises has contracted South African mining equipment provider Pilot Crushtec to supply its plant, in Lusaka, with 12 machines.
Scirocco Enterprises MD Moustafa Saadi says that the order is part of the company’s plan to expand and increase its capacity with a third plant. This plant produces up to 1 500 t/d of aggregate, but Scirocco aims to double this.
Its first plant was set up in 2004, with a capa- city to crush up to three fractions at 1 000 t/d, which primarily supplies aggregate for the block making operation. Its second plant, which was set up in 2007, has a slightly higher capacity and four fractions. It supplies the bulk of aggregates for sale to clients.
“With the new equipment at our third plant, which includes a MF4616 vibrating grizzly feeder, a Pilot Modular MC111000 conveyor, two Pilot Modular DD3615 dry screens, four Pilot Modular MC16600 conveyors and four Pilot Modular MC16800 conveyors, we will be able to reach our goal,” Saadi says.
Pilot Crushtec’s modular semimobile plant, which is versatile enough to be incorporated into the existing plant, saves time and the company is able to concentrate on manufacturing and building the other components and civil work required to install and commission the plant.
Saadi adds that the company put the plant together to best serve its needs with a mix of standard off-the-shelf components and the existing equipment.
The heavy-duty MF4616 vibrating grizzly feeder is 1 168 mm × 4 876 mm and is considered ideal for removing undersize rock and ore from feed material before the primary crushing process. It has a 18,5-kW electric motor, V-belts and sheaves with a variable-speed drive.
The Pilot Modular MC111000 conveyor is designed for use below Pilot Modular jaw crushers. The version used in this application is 11 m long and 1 000 m wide. It also operates with a 15-kW electric motor.
The Pilot Modular DD3615 dry screen operates several options for different applications. Scirocco’s chosen version has an open screen area of 3,65 m × 1,52 m and is driven by an 11-kW electric motor, pulleys and V-belts.
Further, Scirocco also chose the 16-m-long Pilot Modular MC 16600 conveyor. This conveyor is 600 mm wide and is driven by a 4-kW electric motor.
The Pilot Modular MC16800 conveyor, which is 16 m long, is powered by a 9,2-W electric motor. It is 800 mm wide and has a belt speed of 1,5 m/s.
Pilot Crushtec Africa sales manager Wayne Warren says that the relationship between Scirocco and Pilot Crushtec built up over the installation period has resulted in a plant that can potentially reach and exceed expectations.
Warren also describes Zambia as an area with significant potential and opportunities.
“Development is taking place in Zambia. The road development, which is largely donor-funded, is slow at the moment but it should pick up speed with time. There are also other significant infrastructure developments, such as buildings being developed.”
