JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Trade union Solidarity on Thursday announced that it had signed a cooperation agreement with gold producer Sibanye Gold to limit the impact of job cuts at the company’s Cooke 4 shaft, on the West Rand.

The agreement, in terms of which the company undertook to implement various measures and cost-cutting initiatives, including severance packages, to reduce the number of employees to be affected by the layoffs, had also been signed by the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM).

Sibanye had sent a Section 189(3) notice to trade unions on September 12, announcing the possible closure of the shaft and resultant layoffs.

Solidarity mining industry coordinator Connie Prinsloo said the job-protection measures had been agreed upon during the facilitation process regarding the retrenchments, led by the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration.

“The company undertook, besides other things, to place a moratorium on the appointment of new external personnel. The company further indicated that the 392 employees who are still affected by the retrenchment process at the Cooke 4 shaft may apply for vacancies in the greater Sibanye company,” she noted.

"We signed an 'avoidance measures agreement' with Sibanye so there will be no layoffs at Cooke 4," NUM spokesperson Livhuwani Mammburuu told Reuters on Thursday.
