There’s scale and then there’s SCALE, and Anglo American CEO Cynthia Carroll is content with Anglo’s current scale and sees no reason to combine with Xstrata to create SCALE at the BHP Billiton level. The Anglo CEO is also content with Anglo’s current scale, even if it means that heads must continue to roll in the interests of business “sustainability”, whereas Xstrata says there would be no cuts of operational jobs at the combined Anglo-Xstrata SCALE, at which Xstrata is also committing to the creation of an educational institution that would graduate between 2 000 and 3 000 engineers in South Africa a year – which is just what the economic doctor ordered for engineer-short South Africa.
