JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – JSE- and TSX-listed platinum company Anooraq Resources said on Thursday that the name of the Lebowa platinum mine, in South Africa’s Limpopo province, has been changed to the Bokoni platinum mine.
The name was selected through a consultative process and means ‘people of the North’, Anooraq said in a statement.
“Our short time as operators of the mine has reinforced our view that there is significant potential for Bokoni to become one of the leading, long-term platinum group metals (PGM) producers of the future. The name change signifies not only a change in culture, but also the fundamental entrepreneurial approach that we have adopted,” said Annoraq CEO Philip Kotze.
Anooraq acquired an effective 51% interest in the mine from platinum giant Anglo Platinum. The transaction
became effective from July 1.
The Bokoni mine comprises a four-shaft complex, and currently produces 150 000 oz of four platinum elements, on a yearly basis.
