JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Two JSE-listed platinum companies on Wednesday reported that they had closed shafts at their operations, after two workers were killed in mine accidents.

Northam Platinum reported a shaft-related accident at a mine in Limpopo, while Anglo Platinum (Angloplat) said a worker at its Rustenburg operation had been killed.

Northam spokesperson Marion Bower said that the shaft in which the accident had occurred had been closed during the investigation by the government, union and management representatives, and that production losses would be minimal.

Meanwhile, newswire Reuters quoted Angloplat spokesperson Simon Tebele as saying that the company had closed the shaft at the Rustenburg mine immediately after the accident, to allow for investigations.

It was unclear how much output would be lost, he said.
