Welcome to Creamer Media’s Resources Watch, a weekly video round-up of the events and people making and shaping the news in the mining industry.

This week:
Transnet and Eskom offer a coal boost for the black-controlled Exxaro.
Gold Fields pilots two new mining methods at South Deep.
And, more than 90% of South Africa’s seismic events are mining related.

State enterprises Transnet and Eskom have come to the party for black-controlled Exxaro Resources in the half-year to June 30, with more coal trains from Transnet to the Waterberg coalfield and a coal supply settlement with Eskom at the delayed Medupi power station project in Limpopo, which have given the JSE-listed company a twofold boost.

Exxaro CEO Sipho Nkosi

Gold miner Gold Fields aims to pilot two new mining methods at its South Deep mine, in Gauteng, over the next 12 months, with the potential to enable the mine to reach its envisaged steady-state output of between 650 000 and 700 000 ounces a year more quickly and easily.

Gold Fields CEO Nick Holland

While more than 90% of South Africa’s seismic events are mining related, this does not mean all of these events are mining induced.
